Fantasy Warrior 2: Evil

Being evil is so rockstar!

A sequel to the original Fantasy Warrior, for which Sumea received relatively high marks, Fantasy Warrior 2: Evil represents a qualitative leap in every area that counts. While in the original game players took on the role of the heroic Rento, FW2: Evil gives you a look at the nocturnal machinations of the other side of the force (players looking for another Lawful Good experience should check out Fantasy Warrior 2: Good). Boasting a great graphical style, a compelling intrigue, and tunes you might actually want to listen to, FF2: Evil is easily one of the best action role-playing games on mobile.

The game begins when you, Vera the Vampire, are resurrected by the recently released Devin the Demonlord. Armed with blades, fangs, and a bear trap, you head out to do Devin’s bidding. Initially working at odds with the hero Rento, Vera quickly sours on her master and adopts a sort of self-serving, chaotic neutral personality.

FW2: Evil has two main gameplay types–wandering on the world map, and combat. This latter mode works much like The Legend of Zelda. You must alternately attack and dodge, and you can gain an advantage through the use of secondary weapons, which can be found in dungeons. The use of these weapons requires mana, which is gradually recharged. Although it’s not the last weapon she receives, Vera’s most potent secondary item is a magical cape that allows her to simply run through large groups of enemies, causing damage to each in her path. Each of these weapons is well designed and adds a great deal to the depth of the game. Combat feels strategic, rather than repetitive and mindless. The real-time environment helps keep players engaged, as well.

Each group of enemies is represented by a single enemy icon on the world map, à la Grandia. Baddy encounters are therefore never random, and can be avoided entirely. This is great, as random battles can quickly become a nuisance. As with most single-player RPGs, though, it’s important to do enough fighting to level up, or you’ll be unfit to challenge foes later in the game. Leveling up always increases Vera’s maximum health and alternately improves her strength or her mana regeneration rate. There’s no agility stat to reduce the damage Vera receives in combat. She can find and use new and improved chest armor, however. While the game’s stat system doesn’t nearly approach the complexity of an AD&D; game, players will nonetheless feel compelled to increase their powers.

Fantasy Warrior 2’s presentation is top-notch, by the standards of the Motorola V400. Each in-game environment is well differentiated from the last, both visually and auditorily. Your enemies include werewolves, mummies, fire demons, and wizards–all of which are stylistically linked, and simply look great. Fantasy Warrior takes advantage of the V400’s realmusic capabilities as well, providing players with some of the most listenable tunes on mobile. The music shifts with new environments or encounters, and is therefore less repetitive than the standard mobile game audio loop.

Unfortunately, FW2’s brilliance is somewhat tarnished by the presence of an annoying crash bug, which can cause the game to freeze while loading. Since the game frequently and automatically saves your progress, this bug won’t prevent you from progressing, but it’s not going to make you smile, either. Having to force-quit an app and restart it may be tolerated by PC enthusiasts, but certainly not by the comparably casual mobile crowd.

In spite of this issue, Fantasy Warrior 2: Evil is one of the best examples of its underrepresented genre. An enjoyable and surprisingly lengthy adventure, this is a great game, whether or not you decide to purchase its Lawful Good counterpart.
